An In-Depth Guide to Signing Up for Medicare for the First Time
During Medicare signup or when you apply for Medicare, there are some important things to make note of. That’s why it’s often recommended to work with an experienced health insurance professional, like the team from Good and Associates Insurance Services.
Here we’ve collected some of the most important things to keep in mind when signing up or applying for Medicare!
When Do I Become Eligible for Medicare?
The first thing you’re probably wondering is when you become eligible to apply for Medicare. The initial enrollment period, when first applying, takes place over a seven-month period that includes the three months before you turn 65, the month of your 65th birthday, and the three months following it.
However, it’s important to note that signing up when you turn 65 isn’t mandatory. You can delay Medicare Part B if you’re still receiving health insurance from your employer, or you have private health insurance. But there is a late penalty for those who enroll after the initial enrollment period and don’t have special circumstances.
How Do I Sign up for Medicare When I Turn 65?
For those already collecting Social Security, when you turn 65, you’re automatically signed up for Medicare. Often, your Medicare card will be sent to you automatically. However, this isn’t always the case, so if you haven’t received yours or aren’t currently collecting Social Security, you’ll need to apply during the initial enrollment period by visiting the Medicare website and signing up. You can also make an appointment with your local Social Security office to sign up in person.
What’s the Difference Between Original Medicare & Medicare Supplemental Plans?
Original Medicare is the standard Medicare plan that everyone receives. Either Part A or Part B will cover 80% of your healthcare costs, and you’ll be responsible for paying the remaining percentage. However, the supplemental plans are designed to help those who can’t afford to pay the remainder. These plans are sold by private insurance companies and include Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, and Prescription Drug coverage.
